Dell Alienware 17 R5 Review
For this Dell Alienware 17 R5 review, I used the cheapest configuration of this laptop. I did this because the performance of the higher configurations will definitely be better than the laptop I used. Therefore, this build will help me assess the minimum performance this gaming laptop can perform.
The cheapest one that I used had this pure AMD configuration:
Display | 17.3” FHD 1920×1080, 165Hz, 3ms |
OS | Windows 11 Home |
Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 6800H (8 cores, 16 threads), 4.7GHz |

Design
The design of this laptop is pretty good, It has a sleek and compact design without too many engravings, which I liked. Here, I liked the placement of the keyboard and how professional it looked. Since the keyboard has RGB lights on them, it looked even prettier.
The bevel edges of this laptop are pretty slim, which looks superb, in my opinion. In addition, hen back chassis of the screen has this triangle-shaped edges with the Alienware logo, giving it a more gaming laptop feel.
However, the only downside I faced here is the weight of the laptop. While a big 17.3” screen might be awesome, it feels very heavy as a result. You will feel the 7.3 lb of this laptop while carrying it around in a bag for longer periods.
Display
The Dell Alienware 17 R5 has a fabulous display. My build has the FHD version with a 165Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. In my opinion, the 17.3” display makes everything seem better, especially on a laptop. In my opinion, it’s better tha the Dell XPS 13, which only has the benefit of being a touchscreen display.
Playing games feel better due to the larger screen compared to most other gaming laptops with 15.6” screens. I could feel headshots landing more efficiently while playing Valorant due to its low response time and high refresh rates. I wonder what it will feel like with a higher configuration!
Connectivity
Having lots of connectivity ports is a big plus for anyone using a laptop. Here, this laptop doesn’t disappoint in this regard. This laptop has three different USB ports. In addition, two of these ports have PowerShare and DisplayPort compatibilities as well.
Performance
I was surprised by the performance of this laptop, even though I got the lowest-end configuration.
When it came to performing normal tasks, I was surprised by the overall lag-free experience I got. I used various graphically intensive applications like Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effect without any lag. Plus, processing and rendering of the final video in 2K quality were quick too.
Now, when it comes to gaming, I only have one thing to say – this laptop will be a great gift for gamers. The AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor with AMD Radeon RX 6700M graphics is more than enough to run most modern games at the highest settings. In addition, the 17.3” display with 165Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time also made the overall experience better.
Here are some of the frame rates I got playing games on this laptop:
Game | Average Frame Rate (1080p, highest settings, v-sync turned off) |
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | 78 |
Metro Exodus | 63 |
Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 67 |
Cyberpunk 2077 | 56 |
God of War | 60 |
Marvel’s Spiderman | 65 |
Valorant | 134 |
Overwatch 2 | 126 |
Call of Duty: Warzone | 101 |
As you can see, this laptop provided great gaming performance at 1080p resolution. When it came to multiplayer games, I was happy with its performance at max settings. However, I would still suggest gamers play competitive multiplayer games at the lowest settings since more frames win more games.
Battery Life
When it came to the battery life of the Dell Alienware 17 R5, the battery held up pretty well. It lasted a total of 6 hours while gaming, which is higher than most other Alienware 17in laptops. When not playing games, this laptop can last around 9 hours, which is pretty impressive.
